This little ornament represents a trap in the Uncle Remus stories. It was a doll-like figure of a baby made of sticky tar, designed by Brer Fox, to capture Brer Rabbit. The trap depends on Brer Rabbit’s vanity to work. It does its job. Brer Rabbit is stuck and captured by Brer Fox. But, once again, Brer Rabbit uses his trickiness to escape and the inanimate tar baby disappears into the briar patch.
